How It’s Made
Laminate flooring is constructed of four layers of material fused together at high temperatures:
- Wear Layer – easy to clean; contains aluminum oxide and melamine – protects the floors from stains, fading, and wear
- Image Design Layer – a high-resolution photo of the surface it’s emulating (wood, stone, etc.)
- Inner Core Layer – a dense core board made of high density fiberboard – provides structural strength and stability
- Backing Layer – found beneath innder core – made with resin saturated paper – creates a protective moisture barrier
Drawbacks
Not as visually appealing as it’s hardwood counterparts.
Lower qualities of laminate may have artificial-looking wood-grain textures.
Its patterns can sometimes look repetitive
It won’t develop character with age the way wood does
Doesn’t repair easily.
If you buy flooring that comes in individual pieces and snaps together, you may be able to replace individual boards — although, depending on sunlight and age, the new piece may not match properly.
Can produce a hollow sound when walked on
