TIPS:
Choose a stain- and soil-resistant style to simplify maintenance.

Carpet is most prone to damage from messes and traffic, so choose a style that is durable, and stain treated, won’t snag claws, and disguises pet hair.

Shorter Is Stronger

Shorter pile rugs will, as a rule, last a bit longer than longer piles.

They are also easier to care for, as they can be more easily vacuumed.

The denser the pile the better the quality

How do you check the density?

• • Bend a corner of the carpet and see how much backing shows. The more backing you see, the less dense and durable the carpet.

Pile Heights vary

• • Low: less than 1/4″

  • Medium: 4″ to 1/2″

  • Plush: 1/2″ to 3/4″

Clean with Care

Longer and/or loose piles can get caught in the rotating beater bar of your vacuum cleaner, causing damage. Floors Etc. recommends using one without a beater bar turning it off while using it.

How It’s Made

Carpet is constructed by weaving a synthetic or staple fiber into a primary backing material (typically a woven polypropylene). These fibers are woven in loops or piles that are either cut or uncut. Over ninety percent of all of the carpet made today is made up of synthetic fiber.

Drawbacks

Carpet is a relatively high-maintenance floor covering.

• • Doesn’t last as long as hard surfaces.

  • Some carpets can soil easily

Knot count refers to how many knots there are in a rug in a certain area—the higher the knot count, the longer it takes to weave the rug.

Importantly, this doesn’t make a difference in the actual quality of the rug. It will be strong either way—a rug will be slightly stronger if it has a higher knot count.

• A rug pad or cushion will help extend the life of your rug.

  • Even if your rug is not sliding around or has large furniture on it, a  pad absorbs the steps and traffic and softens the impact on the rug fibers.

• In addition to the maintenance we recommend for all our carpet installations, we also recommend you periodically rotate the placement of your area rug(s) as regular traffic will eventually begin to show.

  • This will create even wear across the entire rug surface.
