Types of Wood Flooring

The decision on your wood floors starts with the types available. Each type of wood has its advantages. One should consider each type of wood available and the durability needed in the area it will be installed.

Custom/Job Site Finish:Offers the widest range of choices in your wood floor selection and the ability to have the floors re-sanded numerous times if necessary. You choose the species and width of the wood and the direction or pattern the floor will be installed. The finish is applied at the place of the installation, giving you unlimited possibilities for customizing your floor's color, as well as the ability to choose the type of shine you prefer whether it is a satin, semi-gloss or wax finish. The majority of floors are solid wood and are nailed down but there is also an unfinished engineered floor available that can be glued down.

Prefinished: Prefinished flooring eliminates the dust and noise factors involved in the job-site finishing process and provides an aluminum oxide, factory finish which is harder than any finish that can be applied on-site. Prefinished flooring comes in a multitude of species, styles and colors with something for any decor. They offer solid wood floors that can be nailed down on wood sub-floor; or engineered products that can be glued to a slab, or floating.Each manufacturer provides a wear warranty ranging from 10 to 25 years.

Engineered Flooring:Differs from solid wood flooring in that it is made of multiple plies of wood that run in different directions, similar to plywood with the top wear layer being the wood of choice. This type of floor is more dimensionally stable than solid wood and ideal for rooms with changing humidity and temperature.They can be nailed, glued or even float, depending upon your installation requirements. An Engineered floor can be refinished a limited number of times do to the thickness of the top wear layer.

Species: More than 22 domestic and imported wood species are used for wood flooring. The most common of these are Red Oak, White Oak, Maple, Pine and Hickory/Pecan. Other woods that make beautiful flooring are: Ash, Beech, Birch, Black Cherry, Douglas Fir, Mesquite, Walnut, Brazilian Cherry, Australian Cypress, Jarrah, Mahogany, Merbau, Padauk, Purpleheart, Teak, Wenge and others.
